Summer internship program

Our 10 week summer internship program is available to rising university junior and senior college students and is hosted in our Washington, D.C., Virginia and Plano, TX offices.

The summer internship program provides students with the opportunity to apply their education and perspectives to solving real-world issues, working with diverse teams from finance, technology, audit, and more. Fannie Mae interns are placed on teams based on their specific skills and interests. They work in a dynamic environment alongside full-time employees and are contributors to their teams.

  • Group presentation

The internship program also serves as a pipeline for the Fannie Mae Associate Rotation Program.

Internship tracks

Discover what it’s like to work in the areas of project management, reporting, business analysis, data analysis, operations, risk management, and process improvement. Support business offices, project offices, and communications teams.

Understand how applications support our business while focusing on technical or advanced mathematical analysis, requirements documentation, system analysis, risk analysis, information security and management and production.

Learn the diverse and important role Finance, Accounting, and Procurement has in our company. Gain skills in the areas of accounting policy and operations, financial reporting, budgeting, financial planning and analysis, economic and strategic research and procurement.

Fannie Mae Associates Program

The Fannie Mae Associate Rotation Program is a two-year program for associates to receive on-the-job training while growing your understanding of our business.

Over the course of two six-month rotations and one full-year rotation, associates work in different teams, gain a variety of experiences and skills, and build a wide support network of peers, managers, and officers throughout our Washington, D.C., Virginia and Plano, TX offices.

This program offers our associates exposure to new projects, new positions, and helps them build a diverse set of skills – all while solving real customer challenges.

Associate program tracks

Associates will build skills in areas such as, financial analysis and reporting, project management, business analysis, and data analysis. Associates will also work on teams supporting business offices, project offices, client management, customer support, and communications teams.

Associates will develop a comprehensive understanding of how applications support the business. Technical rotations focus on technical analysis, requirements documentation, system analysis, risk analysis and management and production.

Associates will rotate through various teams in the Finance and Single Family Divisions including Financial Reporting, Business Unit CFOs, Financial Planning & Analysis, Economic & Strategic Research, Finance Administration, and Capital Markets.

Influence key risk management activities. Enhance skills in the planning, execution, testing, and reporting of audits of internal controls, applications, and data and reporting.

Play a key role in our day-to-day operations. Develop and enhance skills in business analysis, data analysis, business process development, and process improvement.

Support our information security operations. Enhance skills in security control monitoring, access management to systems and data and tool implementation.

Associates will rotate through various teams in the Single Family – Digital Products area to gain experience in product development, insights, customer experience design, and strategy/prioritization.

Associates will gain exposure in understanding how to evaluate, monitor, and analyze risk of new and existing business through problem solves and data analysis. Associates will actively assist in minimizing losses and maximizing recoveries for Credit Risk Transfer investors & taxpayers.

Qualifications

Strong candidates for our program possess the following:


  • The ability to make contributions to a team, and lead as necessary
  • A strong analytical background
  • A proactive, solution-oriented outlook
  • Proficiency with various technology applications, notably MS Office
  • GPA of 3.0 or above
  • Authorization to work in the U.S. without sponsorship

Software Engineer Immersion Program

The Software Engineer Immersion Program focuses on deepening skills in design, coding, testing, and supporting software products related to meeting customer requirements.  The Immersion Program enables participants to perform tasks using formal software development methodologies and partners with business areas to develop a comprehensive understanding of how existing applications support the business.


Through an initial 4-week business concepts and technical training, hands-on experience and interaction with the development teams, participants gain a strong understanding of Fannie Mae’s technology and business processes throughout our Virginia & Plano, TX offices.

Qualifications

  • Computer Science, Systems Engineering, and Computer Engineering majors preferred, other technical majors considered
  • Be authorized to work in the U.S. without sponsorship
  • Strong skills in coding languages, databases, frameworks, and libraries
  • Knowledge of unit testing and understanding of Object Oriented Design (OOD) and analysis
  • Ability to adapt shifting priorities, multitask, and communicate effectively verbally and in writing
  • Demonstrates intellectual curiosity, is a self-starter, embraces continuous improvement and is execution oriented

Analytics Training Program

The Analytics Training Program provides opportunities for participants to develop and implement analytical skills by providing research into analytic capabilities, producing insights and providing consultative services, and leveraging data and analytic expertise to extend the dynamic credit risk management and delegation capabilities.


Through an initial 8-week classroom style training, hands-on experience and interaction with the analytics teams, participants gain a strong understanding of Fannie Mae’s technology and business processes throughout our Washington, D.C. & Plano, TX offices.

Qualifications

  • Economics, Finance, Engineering, Computer Science, and Math/Stats majors preferred
  • Be authorized to work in the U.S. without sponsorship
  • Demonstrated research and problem-solving skills
  • Possess superior communication skills and goal-oriented mindset
  • Interest in using data and technology to improve business decisions and processes, along with a desire for practical training in applied modeling and analytical methods
